Skincare Tools/Treatments that I Recommend to EVERYONE

September 27, 2018

My skincare routine never ceases to evolve as I get older. Let's chalk it up to getting wiser with age. With social media and all things internet, it has never been easier to find any kind of product you're looking for. If you need to match your lipstick to every shirt you own, you can bet you'll find every shade you can imagine. With so many new companies and products out there, it's exciting to explore but can be overwhelming. When you google one thing and a million options pop up, it can be hard to narrow down the options.

Having a self-proclaimed phobia for decisions, I really like to do my homework before I spend money on anything so I love reading reviews and going through social media to see what people say about products I'm interested in. As I continue to age gracefully, anti-aging products are more and more important to me. I know we should accept ourselves and embrace our age and all that but hey I want to look like my best self so I love finding new ways to do that. While I'm constantly trying new things, I do have some products and tools that have proven to be worth my time and money. Here's 3 tools/treatments I use without fail that have improved my skincare routine: my ice roller, AngelLift strips and my derma-roller.

The first tool I’m going to talk about is without a doubt my favorite part of my skin regimen. I try to keep things simple and ice rolling is as simple and low maintenance as it can get. So what’s ice rolling? For those wondering what the heck I’m talking about, it’s exactly what it sounds like! Before I committed to purchasing an ice roller, I tested the concept with ice cubes from my kitchen. It only took me a couple days to jump on Amazon and order a proper ice roller.

From the first night I tried this, I was hooked. Not only does the cold feel amazing on your face, but my skin feels like it absorbs my products better. So here’s what “icing” does. The most obvious effect is that it reduces inflammation, and alleviates redness or any skin sensitivities you’re experiencing. In addition the cool temperature has a shrinking effect on your blood vessels and pores. This shrinking effect contributes to a more even tone and smoother surface overall.

The research recommends using at the end of your skincare routine so that all the product you use gets absorbed more efficiently as your pores shrink. Anyone I spend time with has gotten this tip from me. I’m the type of person that when I find something that really works, I love to share with anyone who will listen.

As I continue to add tools and new products to my routine, I now make the effort to multi-task whenever I can. I wish I had endless time, as do we all, but a full time job, a long commute, making dinner and trying to have a life is tricky to juggle. So here’s how I do 2 things at once to make my nightly routine more efficient. I start my routine with cleansing, then putting on my serums and moisturizer, and then I do the multi-tasking. I use my ice roller and use my AngelLift Dermastrips. Dermastrips are these amazing “hydro-gel” strips that go in my mouth almost like a teeth whitening strip. The strip uses an outward pressure to literally lift out and lines and wrinkles around my mouth. I found AngelLift while looking for products that would help get rid of some annoying lines around my lips. I noticed my lipstick starting to bleed and so my quest for a resolution began.

A lot of the options were chemical fillers or surgery of some kind but I was looking for something less invasive. I prefer a more natural approach and that’s how I came across these funky strips. The company got its start on Shark Tank so I felt pretty confident placing my order. I’ve used them for a few months now and I’m hooked. You’re supposed to use them every day when you start out and once you see the change you want, you wear them once or twice a week for maintenance. The strip goes under your top or lower lip along your gum line and that’s it! I do my ice rolling, then prep things for my next day while lifting out my mouth wrinkles.

This next tool is a weekly treatment I’ve done for almost a year now and it’s a game changer! If you’ve not heard of a derma-roller I’ll happily fill you in. A derma-roller has micro-sized needles that create tiny punctures in your skin. These tiny injuries in your skin puts your collagen and elastin production into full gear to improve the look of skin’s texture (including scarring) and leave you with more plump, rejuvenated skin. While needles sound scary, it’s not torturous like it sounds. It really just feels like tiny pin pricks and they’re worth it. There’s different sized needles so you to start small and work your way up as needed. Needle sizes range in diameter from 0.5 to 2.5 mm and you can find hundreds of different companies that sell them online.

Not only is micro-needling a helpful treatment on its own but  it also works to improve the efficacy of your topical treatments you use so another great way to multi-task. After I roll my face, I always apply my creams and serums so they can sink in much better through all the tiny pin pricks on my freshly needled face. It may sound over the top, but do your own research before you say no! There’s so many helpful tutorials online that helped me get started and understand why I should do it at all.

I’m sure you’re looking at your overwhelming collection of products and tools you’ve bought but it’s important to test new things out. Everyone’s skin is different so not all products are equal but I definitely have come to find that these 3 products are universally used by all types of skincare lovers.
